Angelica Sinensis / Dang Gui
Angelica is a powerful anti-inflammatory that’s proven to reduce uterine spasms (aka cramps), regenerate blood cells, and stimulate circulation.
Helps with:
Cramps
Constipation
Irregular Menst
General Aches
How it Heals
In Chinese medicine, Angelica regulates menstruation by generating new blood, invigorating blood flow, and dispersing cold blood. It also addresses constipation by assisting the intestines with increased fluid.
In Western medicine, Angelica provides Folic Acid, Iron, Biotin, Calcium, and Vitamins B12, A, and E. It has antibacterial properties and has been shown to balance hormones and stimulate the immune system.
Fun fact: Angelica is known as the ‘female ginseng’ because of its ubiquitous use in treating women’s health conditions.
What the research says
Dang Gui generates new white blood cells, red blood
cells, hemoglobin, and platelets via 5 separate
metabolic pathways: arachidonic acid metabolism;
valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis; glycine,
serine, and threonine metabolism; arginine and proline
metabolism; and TCA cycle.
Dang Gui enhances immune system function and
reduces oxidative stress though antioxidants
superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT),
glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and reduced glutathione
(GSH) and lipid peroxidation levels.
The major constituents of Dang Gui (ferulic acid, Z-
ligustilide, n-butylidenephthalide) were shown to exhibit
anti-inflammatory, immunostimulatory, anti-cancer,
neuroprotective, and anti-hepatotoxic effects.
In a clinical study with ovariectomized rats, Dang Gui
extract exhibited estrogenic activities by stimulating
uterine histoarchitecture, a significant cornification in
the vaginal epithelium, and a reduction of the serum LH
(Luteinizing hormone) concentration.
